I just don't think aquariums make good bird cages. The glass walls would need constant cleaning and the birds would take a while to get used to walls being there that they can't see. You could risk some serious injuries as they are flying into the walls (until they got used to how far they can fly). The only fresh air would be coming in the top (if it is open).

Sorry, I just prefer birdcages with bars or some glass, but still plenty of area for fresh air exchange.

I agree with Liz, ventilation would be a real problem. Instead of using the aquarium, how about using the furniture base to build a cage on top of, then use the hood for enclosed lighting. You could always do plexiglass for the front, and wire for the sides for ventilation. It could make a really attractive cage setup.

hey alec,

judging from your posts, you seem pretty keen to have as many different kinds of finch possible in as small a space as possible.

i am new to finch keeping, but i spent all summer building a four metre squared walk in outdoor aviary. in that i keep just six breeding pairs of birds.

already i've had problems with aggression. and i have had to begin planning a second aviary for flexibility of management.

and i'm not even going to start on the ethics of keeping birds permanently in small cages.

my advice. before you buy any more birds and put them in fishtanks - buy a bigger cage for the ones you already have.
