aviary materials

ok so I've been trying to price out what it'll cost to make an aviary this summer and have been coming up bust on the materials! I couldn't find the powder coated wire mesh at Home Depot, where have you all found this before? Also I asked about plastic hardware netting that is mentioned on the Finch Info Centre and they looked at me like I had a third head then sent me to gardening supplies for the netting that is used to cover fruit trees to keep birds off, but this stuff was really flimsy looking, does anyone know if that's what's meant by "hardware netting"? I also looked for those perforated aluminum radiator covers and couldn't find anything, it was a very frustrating Tuesday for me lol. Can those of you who have built aviaries please let me know where you found the materials? So far all I could find was wood, and I'm not sure if it was the right stuff either :?

I got my wire mesh at Home Depot so I know they carry it. I don't recall exactly what dept. it was located though. Most of the store personnel unfortunately does not have a clue what items they have for sale. Unless you can find an older man to help you you are SOL. I normally just wander up and down every aisle til I find what I'm looking for!

I've seen the rolls of plastic mesh outdoors at LOWES with the fencing material. You might give that area a try as they will soon be gearing up for spring and should be well stocked.

Hiya! I've used this stuff to make birdfeeders before, its called hardware cloth. It comes in rolls with different sizes of openings between the wires. Try this link: http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN ... 0&MID=9876

Hi Finchlet, I don't believe your link took me where you intended.

I searched for green vinyl coated hardware cloth, (which I found at my local Home Depot) but didn't see it on their website. That doesn't mean they don't carry it, you'll just have to ask your local store manager.

This is what I used, Image

You can also get it at ACE HARDWARE and LOWES. I've seen it at both places. You don't want to use the galvanized hardware cloth as the zinc it contains is toxic to birds.

Yeah, that link looked awfully long and wierd. You can go to the Home Depot site and do a search for hardware cloth. They also have one that I think is plastic called hardware net. Hope it's helpful.

For the perforated radiator covers, forget Home Depot. You need an Ace hardware.

I have not seen powder-coated wire anywhere. You could use galvanized for finches (but galvanized isn't safe for chewing birds like parrots), or order from somplace like critter-cages.com or klubertanz, and have it powder-coated locally.

ok thanks guys, unfortunately I can't see your picture tammie :( I guess I'll have to check all our local hardware shops when the time comes and if I can't find it maybe we'll take a quick day trip to the States to grab materials. We don't have Ace Hardware in Canada I don't think.
