I am putting the last touches on my new aviary and wondering what types of outdoor tree branches are safe for finches and canaries. I live in wisconsin (northern)

Don't make the mistake I did. Get branches that are BIG enough that they can use their claws. I had perches that were too small and the claws were not used, and thus the claws grew w/o any wear.
Or better, use one of the abrasive perches (sand, cement, etc) at the feed station or water tube. That way they get their claws worn down when they go for food or water.

thank you for your reply. Do you have any idea of what kind of natural perches I should use. I am going for a very natural outdoorsie look. Any type in northern wisconsin that I should NOT be using??

I think you would be safe with any of the hardwoods or fruit trees. Poohbear was putting pine branches in his aviary, I believe.

And ash,sycamore,hazel,oak...never had a problem with any.Choice of branches with hookbills is another matter...finches don't gnaw on them like they do.
