Getting Back into the hobby

Post by mascott » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:27 pm

Hi I'm new! :D

I had A pair of Zebras like ten years ago in on of those inhumane small parakeet cages. Now I'm older and more experenced, I'm starting a small Aviary/Flight cage. I have it 90% built just have to take some pics to show y'all.

Its 30 inches tall/deep
40 inches long

I built it from large poster frames they where throwing away at work and plastic wire mesh.

I'm working on what specie(s) I'll put in there.
looking at 3 pairs at most.

species I like are (I know that they can't all go together)
Zebras
Lady G's
Shaft tails
Stars
Parrot finches
Cordon Blues
Oranged cheeked waxbills

I also love Diamond doves

I'm a big aquarium guy and my Fiancee won't let me spend much money on new pets so I'm trying to take things slow and cheap but also doing my best to see after the welfare of the animals.

I'll post some pics later tonight!

P.S. any suggestions are appreciated :D

I hope the flight will be inside, cause plastic mesh outdoors can be a danger to the birds. Rats, mice , etc can chew their way in. Good luck! I also love my aquariums.

I don't know what kind of budget you have in mind to spend on the birds themselves. Some of the birds you listed are between 20.00- 130.00+ per bird in the pet stores. I would highly recommend getting in touch with a breeder since they are usually cheaper. But even from a breeder it can be a bit costly depending on what you are willing to spend and what species you want. Last I checked, Gouldians at Petsmart were like 139.00 for 1 regular greenback, and the cheapest direct from a breeder being about 65.00.
The Least costly of those you listed would be the Zebra finches, Orange cheeked waxbills and the Diamond doves.
Where are you located?

it's def. gonna be kept inside! I'm keeping it in my "Tank Room" where all my menagerie is.

I'm trying to stay cheap because I'm a College student who is getting married in six months. Things are pretty tight right now, but I am "allowed" to use the money I make trading/selling/growing Corals to finance my hobbies.

I wanna stay reasonable because I have been known to drop $150 on a Coral frag

I'm from Birmingham Alabama, There aren't many Breeders that I have found around here on google but I'm sure that I can find some through this site!

I have a 210 salt tank, fish only(some crab, shrip, starfish). I love the corals but you are right they are costly...not to mention the metal halides.
I am set up with lighting but just can't seem to get the nitrates in check.... I use city water...high in phophorus ...maybe one day I will get RO water.............
Something about colorful birds and colorful fish.............. makes me happy :D
