Well I got my green singer a few days ago. He is beautiful!!!! He is alone in a divided cage. He can see birds on both sides. Can I just keep him by himself?
On all the internet videos I looked at of the green singers they were alone in small cages.

Too sad! Finches like to have company! Even if he can see other birds, I think he would be happier to have another bird in with him. Can be same sex if you don't want to breed. They will buddy up and preen each other, if they are comfortable and have enough room in their cage.
I know that in the old days it was common to keep male canaries in a cage by themselves so they would sing more. But what most people didn't realize what they they weren't singing because they were happy...

they were singing to try to attract a mate!
And they should always be in the LARGEST cage you can afford/have room for. You'll have a healthier happier bird if it can actually FLY.
See the cage size calculator to be sure you put your Green Singer and friend in a cage that's big enough.

Please, please don't keep your bird alone in a cage by himself. If you take out the divider and he doesn't get along with the others you already have, then think about getting a larger cage and a friend for him, preferably another green singer, or another bird from the same group of "pushy" species:

I don't know about this one Star. Everything I've ever read has told me to keep finches with some buddies: they hate being alone. But I think that this can depend on the individual bird. I have had my green singer alone for a little while now and he seems to be ten times happier on his own. When I had him with other birds he wouldn't allow anyone to come near him and would hiss at the other birds. He would never sing or call and seemed very bitter and unhappy. On his own he sings when the sun comes up and bathes in the water dish. He can see other birds but he doesn't have any contact with them. I've only had about twenty finches, but I think I can tell when they are happy or unhappy and my GS Oliver seems much happier now. I read on FIC that green singers only pair up during the breeding season and seperate afterwards, so in a sense they are already pretty solitary birds. Also green singers are very violent towards other green singers so getting him a male buddy is out of the question as well. Really, it all comes down to judgement. You have to decide if your green singer is happy on his own or happier with other birds. Try both and decide which makes him more comfortable.
