Repaint cage? Bamboo plants?

Post by Hope » Sun Apr 22, 2007 5:35 pm

I bought a larger used cage, since I've bought three new finches. I'm going to clean and disinfect it, but can I repaint it? Would I have to use special paint or can I just use spray paint? It's just a regular 30"x36"x18".

I'm anxious to decorate it with the silk ivy vines I bought. Has any one used the little bamboo plants they sell? Are they safe?

If you use a good quality, water based spray paint and be sure to let it air out for a decent amount of time before moving them in, they should be okay.

I wouldn't recommend this for hookbills as they use they beaks for climbing and would soon have the paint gnawed off, but I don't believe it will be a problem with finches.

That's the size cages I have, and I had one that had gotten somewhat rusted. They are white, so I bought a water-based white spray paint, and have had no problems using the cage for finches.

Out of curiosity, Hope, how much did you pay for that cage? I have one of those, and am looking to upgrade, and I'm curious how much I may be able to sell mine for.

if you want bamboo make sure it's actually bamboo not lucky bamboo, which ironically, isn't bamboo at all. The lucky stuff is apparently toxic whereas the real bamboo is not. I'm researching a vivarium right now and will be trying to find some small real bamboo to plant in it :)

I paid $30 for the cage which was half price compared to new in the store.
It cleaned up pretty well and will do till I can upgrade also.

What is lucky bamboo :?: The kind I was going to get has several short pieces that are sprouting leaves and it is usually in a planter. I seen some that are about a foot high. I thought it would look nice in the corner of the cage. I guess I better check again.
