No. Way too big an opening. You will need 1/2" by 1/2" mesh for most finches. If small waxbills, then you could go even smaller, to 3/8" by 3/8".
Or 1" X 1/2" would also work, if that's a bit cheaper.

That sounds too big! My zebs can get in and out of a nestbox with a hole about that size.
The cheapest way to buy mesh is from Wickes,

these look OK for zebs although I'm no expert

Don't use that mate they'll go straight through it.
If you are going to any shows you will see loads of mesh for sale outside in the car parks.Including the 1/2x1/2 green plastic coated.
Muncaster is a well known wire manufacturer that a lot of the guys use.Wickes is a convenient source but I have found in the past that the quality can vary.
You need 1x1/2 or 1/2x1/2 for finches even smaller for some waxbills

That's great that they will exchange it. Not too bad a difference in the price. Yes, get the 1/2 X 1/2 and you will have no problems. Now get busy!

I think with the 1/2"x1/2", strawberry and small finch still can sneak out.

As long as you aren't going to have the smaller waxbills, you should be fine with 1/2x1/2.

only thing I ever had get through the 1/2" x 1/2" mesh was baby button quail, never a finch. changed all of my aviaries to 3/8" x 3/8" mesh just in case though.

Actually, even society and zebra finch can get out, I found that the wild Lonchura striata which have a fairly same size with society, can get out easily when using 1/2x1/2. Societies or zebra dont go out just because they are so domestic, and they dont "want to" or even try to, believe me. For safety, I'd better using at least 1/3x1/3(~1x1cm) or smaller.

I don't understand how a finch can escape a 1/2"x1/2" mesh. All my cages have always been made with 1/2" mesh. I have never had a finch escape. Goldbreast fledgeings can get their head in the opening but I have never had any be able to get through. I also use 1" x 1/2" welded wire and have never lost a finch by escaping.
IMO 1/4" wire it is way too small and makes it difficult viewing the birds.

Surely its impossible for a zebra finch to escape 1/2" x 1/2" mesh.

I've never had a finch escape from 1/2x1/2 or 1/2 inch gap bars although I have had two cases of birds getting their heads stuck between bars
