Thanks Emily. I was going to make some nicer more eye appealing box cages this spring but I got a little side tracked with my pigeons so I have no idea when I will get around to that.

What a great size! That's kinda the size I'd like to have...but can't find in a manufactured cage...
...I'd be willing to make one...but because the flight I want is a focal point (sort of)...I know I can't do a nice enough job...
...but hey! We ARE building a chicken-coop! (It's taking forever too!)...
A bird in the hand...requires some serious washing up...

The large cage my shaft tails are in I made out of some 2x4 scraps and a piece of scrap ply wood we had lying around. The wire I used was left over from my dove pen, so I threw it all together to make a cage. Oh yeah, I used a scrap piece of linoleum for a cage tray as well. Hey when you don't have a lot of money on hand you got to make do with what you have!
I keep coming up with new projects which makes my existing projects take longer then they need too.

Hi bluefinch
I am currently building a small aviary(4' l x2 1/2' w x3' h) and was wondering how you attached the wire to the 2x4s at the bottom. This is a first time project, and this is one of a few things I haven't worked out yet. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, C A

I used the staples that you hammer in to fasten my wire. You could also use screws and washers to fasten it, I think Tammie and finchlet both did that to fasten there wire they could probably give you a better idea of how that works. You could also use a staple gun as well; it all depends on what you prefer.

I like using a staple gun (it's easy) and then hammering any staples which are not flush with the wood down into the wood so the birds can't get their nails caught in them.

Yes I did use screws and washers to attach my hardware cloth. Mainly because it was very very stiff and the staples were popping out.

That's a good point; I've never used anything stiffer than the rolls of hardware cloth sold at home improvement stores, but I can definitely see how using anything with a greater gauge would not work as well with a staple gun.
