It has some seed (and other yummy stuff in it), it is dry (which is great 'cause it won't spoil in the humid, heat here in Baltimore, Maryland) so you don't have to worry about getting it out before it gets yucky or dangerous. Yeah, it doesn't look appealing to the human eye, but if you're a finch -YUM!
Variety in diet seems to be the big suggestion I see everywhere: here, in books, online, etc. Even if you go to pellets, some seed (they like to open the hulls, it is what these birds do, afterall), eggfood, fresh foods, etc should all still be offered regularly.

Try some hard boiled egg with some finely crushed egg shell in it. My birds LOVE it and it's so good for them too. I even put some Zupreem fruit flavored diet in it {also crushed} it gives them that extra nutrient they seem to need. The egg shell is just the shells off the hard-boiled eggs {boiled for 1hr} it's a great source of Calcium for them also.
