I have no idea as I have never oiled seed. Not sure if the benefits outweigh the hassle.

The "oiled seeds" that you're talking about is called "tonic seeds." they're made with aniseed oil -or- citrus oil . I copied part of the post from Kenny from England where he describes his Tonic seeds.
Here is My List of "Tonic Seed"
Japanese millet
red millet (this is the stuff that comes off the anjou sprays )
hemp
lettuce seed
Niger
naked oats (groats )
linseed
parrilla
sesame
blue maw (poppy seed )
chicory seed
teazle
And if you can get a Citrus oil: Orange, or Lemon or as I said Aniseed they will love it...
What he does is mix these seeds together then puts the oil in with the seed and mixes it all together. Now he did say it was very fattening so to only use a small amount a couple of times a week. I believe it was 1/2 teaspoon per bird. I'm sure if you look through the postings here you'll find the post for it.

hi flame
most of the seeds in the mix are oily but the aniseed oil does make it more apatizeing for the birds niger, linseed and hemp are very oily...thats why they only get a small amount each as some of the others are fattening and others are for carbs, etc so its like having meusli in the morning a nice balanced diet

Hi Hope....
When I say Oiled Seeds I am talking about seeds that I added Red Palm Oil or Breeders Aid Oil.
For some reason my Ladies Do Not eat boiled eggs, veggies or anything besides seeds. So needless to say I add supplememnts so they will get their vitamins and minerals into their systems.
I take 5 cups of dry seeds. (my own special mix) depending on if it is resting period or breeding period I add 1 tablespoon of RPO or BAO and mix well. I separate the seeds into 2 - 2 qt glass jars. I add more seeds to make 5 cups. Mix well. I put the jars in the refrigerator over night. the next morning I add to the oiled seeds whatever brand I have on hand.
To the RPO: Resting Period
1 tbsp powder egg white
1 tbsp Feather Up or Feather Fast
1 tsp Triple Green (this is their greens)
1/2 tsp of Spirilina (sp)
To the BAO: Breeding Period
1 tbsp powder egg white
1 tbsp SuperMax ProBoost or Breeders Blend
1 tsp Triple Green
1/2 tsp of Spirilina
Every other day if I remember I may add powder Calcium to the oiled seeds. I have been doing this for 2 yrs and have had good results. Have not lost any adults or babies in awhile. Before I started using RPO I was using Wheat Germ Oil. The Tripel Greens I started using about 4 months ago.

I don't mean any disrespect Marigold but this seems like an awful amount of work. I read that your birds don't eat anything but seeds, so you have a really big problem. But normally, with birds that will take to the hard boiled eggs and cut up veggies, I don't think most people should have to go through all that trouble. I use a hard boil egg mix that includes: the eggs, crushed egg shell for calcium, some wheat germ, smashed sun flower seeds for fat and nature oil, and I put in the zupreem fruit flavored diet. This mix along with their seed and some veggies or greens weekly. Some "treats" of cereal, cheese, bread, etc and the birds get everything they need naturally without going out and buying all these premixed items that they sell in the stores, that cost you an arm and a leg.

LOL.......It sounds like you do more work then me. If I am not mistaking I think Zupreem is a factory packaged premixed item you give your Birds and it's not cheap either.......
The 10 cups of oiled seeds lasts 2 to 2 1/2 weeks for 130 Lady Gouldians. I have not lost any adults or babies in a long time. I set up 4 pairs the beginning of this year and got 22 babies. They gave me healthy babies. I don't think I am having any problems....
Why fix it if is isn't broken...
I give my Ladies Miracle Meal egg food, oystershell, egg shells, kelp granules and charcoal in a treat dish. This is replaced every week. They just don't eat any veggies or boiled eggs...Yuck that is a messy thing to have to make and clean and it stinks too....
It sounds like your birds are healthy and my birds are healthy. Everybody does it different and use different suppliments. As long as it works for me I will continue to do it. Thanks for the heads up...

You're right about everybody doing things differently! If you ask 10 people on this site what they feed their birds - You'd get 12 different answers LOL! We all do things our own way and that's why posting the differences are good - It gives us some ideas we may not have thought about using!!
You're also right about the Zupreem it is a little expensive but I use it anyway so I know they're getting everything I know they need! I guess that's my way of spoiling them!
