Thanks Janine :D

What you are describing sounds like perfectly normal foraging and selection. One of the biggest mistakes made regarding diet is expecting birds to eat all of the food all of the time, and then permanently eliminating anything not quickly eaten.

I'd say "keep on keeping on" with what you're doing \:D/

Thank you kind sir, I will
Anyway the seed hopper bottoms all get emptied outside, this is my way of contributing to the wild birds. :D Being as how I have the choice between spoiling my babies, or feeding the wild ones. My babies won me over hands down. =D>

Hi Candace!

Yep...my wild birds eat real good also :D

Since I only keep one species, the Goulds get one shot at the seed and then straight to the backyard birds.

Like AC12 mentions, if you offer seed deeper than about 1/4 inch, then blowing off the top to get to new seed underneath is fine, but forcing the same seed under their nose over and over again is less than optimal.

How to cut down on seed waste - Seed Hoppers. Often takes a month or so for finches to learn to use them, but once they do you will see your seed cost drop by at least 50% compared to using those D cups that come with many cages. Your seed blend will be offered continuously in constant proportions allowing your birds the final decision.

See ya :D

About using a straw.
Use the straw with a bend in it, so you can keep your face away from above the seed dish. This keeps the blow seeds out of your face. :(
