I have a fresh bag of Lyric nyjer seed - the label says the seed is selected and cleaned. I gave a little bit to my GS pair as a treat and they loved it. However, when I went back to study the label again I saw it said it was not recommended for caged birds.
Is this because nyjer alone is not a complete diet?
I've read that nyjer is oilier than many other seeds and should be a small part of a bird's diet. There is no nyjer at all in either of the two fortified seed mixtures I provide for daily diet.
So my question is, is there really anything harmful about sharing my outdoor finch food with my GS?
They are young and active, so I would think the calories would not be a problem, especially during winter months when the house is cooler.

Re: wild bird food?
I am not sure why it is not recommended for caged birds, could be there are chemicals or it is dusty. There are companies that sell nyger made for caged birds....like Faboulous Finch
