Research is always good. Another pointer is to use you ground flax soon after grinding as this type seed goes rancid quickly once exposed to air. However the seed is well stabolized within the shell for very long periods.
Also keep any ground seed refrigerated and in a dark container.
Raw flax seed contains some cyanide  but so do cashews... not enough to hurt us but use caution when feeding tiny finches.
More homework and studies:

Candace, since you include the seed in your mix...are your feeding that mix daily?

Thanks for the info Cindy....tomorrow I will take a go at grinding the mineral grit. Maybe I should have bought 2 Coffee Grinders.

Yes, they get the ABBA 1900 daily which contains flax seed. The Finch 1900 is a maintenance diet.
My Cando mix is used for sprouting and to extend the ABBA seed for my zebra and society finches to cut cost. I can make my mix for $ .50 per pound so it proves to be a great savings, the advatage of buying bulk wholesale and having it shipped to a commercial storefront :D I sell it in my store for $ 1 per pound and people love the price and freshness! In the future I am thinking of mixing 100 lbs of white, siberian, german millets, and canary grass seed to 50 lbs of flax. It will be even less costly and lower flax , after much research I don't think it is best to have flax in the same quanities as the millets. So I will tweak the ratio. I also sometimes add oat groats and shelled sulflower chips.(especially for the parrot finches) I order my feed grade seed in 50 lb. sacks and it is really fresh. It sprouts like crazy and since it doesn't contain any pelleted foods or synthetic vitamins it is perfect for chitting. I don't give chitted /sprouted seed daily... I try to chit/sprout for breeding birds but time doesn't always allow for that to be done daily...I try for 3 to 4 time a week.

  Just trying to be helpful.....
Actually I have been researching much about seeds because of trying to come up with a good mix to use as a feed extender and a cheaper alternative for some of my customers.
Your post just came after some of my recent research in regards to flax seed
Sweet Dreams :D
