Lettuce - yes or no?

Post by Rue » Sun Jul 15, 2007 1:06 pm

This came up in another forum (marine tanks! ).

Someone rescued a budgie and requested care advice...and I listed lettuce as an appropriate food along with others...

...another poster was told by her vet NEVER to feed lettuce.

I've always been feeding lettuce to all the birds...never had a problem with diarrhea or anything of that nature...

Has anyone else been told this is a no-no?

Ice berg lettuce is a no-no. But I do feed green leaf or romaine lettuce once, maybe twice a week.

My vet said lettuce is dangerous due to the chemicals used on them as pesticides, he told me that we humans should also avoid the stuff because no matter how much you wash it they never come off completely, I guess organic lettuce is safe though.

Lettuce is in and of itself not dangerous. Iceberg has pretty much no nutrition whatsoever and is all water. So it'd not worth it even without pesticides.
