does anyone else feed green seed to their birds

Post by mickp » Sat Mar 29, 2008 12:04 am

am just wondering how many other people feed their birds green seeds, by this I mean unripened seeds.
I started to do it, after being told that it was something that the birds prefer to eat. especially so during breeding season.
the birds dont seem able to get enough of it, when thinking about it in the wild it would probably be one of their main sources of food.
Have started growing my own now and am even freezing some for the times that I am unable to grow any. I just threw a handful of their seed mix into a corner of the vegie garden lol

So do you just harvest the seed when it is just starting to go to seed? Do you cut off some stalks and offer it like that? I think you are right, it is probably the main source of food for seedeaters in the wild, and might help bring them into breeding condition.

I put it into the cage like you would a millet spray. some I hang up for the birds others I place on the floor as some of the birds spend most of their time down there.
I harvest it before there is any hint of it beginning to ripen
