Garlic Powder in Eggfood Really Works

Post by Sally » Wed May 14, 2008 11:29 am

My adult Gouldians ate eggfood while they were feeding their babies, but since the babies were weaned and the adults started molting, I couldn't get them to eat eggfood. I tried everything, they wouldn't even look at it.

Fairestfinches add a dash of garlic powder to their eggfood, and I always wondered why, but never got around to asking them. Recently, on another thread, they mentioned that Gouldians like garlic and that will help get them to eat their eggfood.

This morning, I added a dash of garlic powder to the eggfood. Supplied all the breeding cages with their Breeders Blend added, then supplied all the molting cages with their Feather Fast added. Started to walk out of the room, when I noticed the LGs hanging off their perches, looking at the eggfood dish. Within minutes, all five birds were chowing down! This really works!! I had used fairestfinches eggfood recipe before, but sort of evolved my own and didn't bother with the garlic powder.

Thank you, Sean and Michele (fairestfinches)!! I was starting to look like a feather-plucked Zebra, with all the hair I was pulling out over this!

Wow, never heard of using garlic powder. i hardly give my finches egg food though. but they get regular diet seeds, fruit mix and green seeds and grain. i think y finches have it made living with me.

My 2 Zebs also ate a good deal of boiled egg with a pinch of garlic powder.

Going to try this tomorrow, so far my Zebra's won't eat anything but seeds, Special K's and egg shells.

It's great to hear that the garlic powder got their attention.

If you notice over time that the birds are not showing much interest in the egg food leave the garlic out for a week or two and then start adding it again.
