Yes, homemade eggfood is the best thing for the babies, they need that extra protein to grow. If it is too moist once you mash it, you can always dry it out a little with commercial eggfood, or nestling food, or even yellow cornmeal.

Sally is right on the eggfood.
Also I do provide all parents with young a small dish of Laberfer's finch pellets. It is very small, easily eaten and a good weaning food as well. Petsmart carries it as does Pet Supermarket. Petco in my area discontinued some of their finch line of products.
Also romaine and veggies are good to provide along with the other foods. I mix seed and pellets like Roudybush Maintenance Nibbles or Zupreem finch size pellets (I am moving more towards Roudybush) in my seed as well.
I hope this helps.

I just make my own egg food, boil eggs and then take the shells off(save the shells) and make sure there is no membrane stuck to the shell left.
Set aside the boiled egg and put the egg shells in a ziplock bag and get a rolling pin, roll over the back many times until the shells are very small or start to turn to powder(the more powdery the better!)
Once you have gotten the egg shells powdered (in any way, i just use a rolling pin) then you take half of a boiled egg and put on a small plate, i found that peanut butter lids(cleaned) are great to use as egg food plates, smash the egg with a fork changing directions when you smash.
then take some corn meal powder, and kale as well as some shredded carrots and mix it into the egg food, put the egg shell powder on the top of it last.
that's how i make egg food, it's GREAT for the babies as well as the parents. my finches grew like well.. baby birds! they are almost as big as english zebras, no joke(well gus and falcon at least, but they don't get as much exercise as Tahny)
good luck!
