Too soft hard boiled eggs

Post by finchandlovebird » Fri Mar 01, 2013 9:44 am

I boiled 5 eggs this morning for my birdos, and didn't boil them long enough. The yellow was a little runny. I mashed it up & added regular stuff & gave it to them; but I'm wondering if this is not a good thing. Runny yolks?????

I don't know if it would be harmful, but my birds won't eat eggfood if it is too wet, so you may find that yours don't clean up as usual. I'm telling how I boil my eggs in the other thread about this. http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24174

I agree with Sally. The finches most likely won't eat wet eggfood. I put 12 eggs in water and set on stove until starts to boil. Then, set timer for 13 minutes. Take off heat immediately and put in ice water to stop cooking. Then, crack eggs, with shell and set in fridge for a few hours. Finally, I add 2-3 TBS of handfeeding powder in food processor and pulse til crumbling. Refrigerate up to 2 days or freeze for a month.

You have to figure out YOUR stove and pot and number of eggs.

On MY electric stove with 3 eggs into a small pot with water about 1/4" above the eggs.
Medium-High for 10 min
Low for 15 min. Sometimes I will turn off the heat in the last 2 or 3 min, as the heating element is still hot.
soak in cold water for 3 minutes
then I shell the eggs

Yoke is cooked and not gray. Sometimes it is just starting to turn gray, so I will probably cut the time a bit.

As long as the eggs are heated enough to kill any pathogens, there's no danger with an undercooked egg. Unless the egg is carrying salmonella you could even feed it raw without any ill effect; the only question is whether the birds would eat it.

Everyone has their own method of cooking eggs - I turn the flame off as soon as the water begins to boil and leave the eggs in the hot water for twenty minutes or so, and they're perfect every time.

If you are still concerned, you could always zap it in the microwave briefly before you feed (let it cool, of course), just to put your mind at ease.

Couldn't survive with my birds w/o their help & advice.

This morning I cracked open one of my "soft" eggs & put it in a little thing I have; called Microwave Omelet in a pot, by Jo!e. that's not a missspelling, it's how the brand name is spelled.

Egg turned out perfectly cooked !!!!!!!!! Yay, now I don't have to throw away the rest of my "soft boiled" eggs.

I was just kidding. (I can be a little sarcastic in my humor) I totally agree... I would probably be in the looney bin if this forum and the wonderful people were not around to help me..

I am glad you were able to salvage your eggs. What a cool microwave accessory that is. I think I will look into it!

Thank you Dolly!
