So putting the eggs in the fridge for 6+ hours dries them out? Would it dry them out if I put the eggs in the fridge with the shells still on?

Sallly,
Well not really dry, but drier than trying to chop the egg right after boiling. So the egg is less sticky and I don't have to use as much cornmeal.

The egg might dry out in the fridge w the shell on.
But since I take the shell off, I find it easier to shell the egg, right after boiling, then put the shelled eggs in the fridge.

I think I will try peeling the eggs and putting them in the fridge next time, see if that will let me add less dry material.

I've been wondering about feeding them eggs. Hard boiled wise, how long to boil them for and what's the popular way to prepare it after it's boiled and how long to wait to feed them to the finches? I never tried feeding them boiled eggs since I got them Sunday.

I have 2 Society Finches, in case it makes a difference as to what breed of finch will accept boiled eggs. Oh, and also, what do finches prefer, cuttlebones or boiled eggs, as far as protein is concerned?

Am still learning and appreciate any feedback and comments.

Just hard boil the eggs like you would for yourself. You can mash the egg with a fork and add a bit of corn meal or I use hand feeding formula to dry it out a bit. If they don't take to it right away try adding their regular seeds sprinkled on top of the egg.
The shells I just let them have a variety of piece sizes.
Cuttle bone, egg shells and oyster shells are for calcium not protein. Any will do or like most offer, a mixture of all. :)

Thanks Debbie. I thought I read somewhere shells were good for protein. So that's where that came from. Since posting my question, I have tried the egg idea. Hardboiled an egg, let it dry and cool, put it in a blender on "mince" and mixed it with bird seed. They took to it right away. They seem like big eaters, always in the food dish. Hopefully it isn't a concern that they eat so much. They seem to be doing just fine. It's nice to see them "palling around" and doing alot of things together.
