Looking for the best birdseed available

Post by Nanajennie » Sun Mar 31, 2013 11:22 am

I am curious about what people are feeding their finches. Anyone heard of this brand? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... 4508&rel=1

My Zeb's really don't like the black seeds that come in most mixes so I feed them a mix of two bags Kaytee Supreme Finch daily blend and one bag of Kaytee Fiesta Max... they tear it up

My finches love the seed I get from Roose Green Solutions http://www.roosegreensolutions.com/index.php/
On their site go to Live Finch and Bird Seed and see the selection.

The other seed I feed my birds is from Wingin It and its called
Volkman Featherglow at http://birdseed.com/

I can't keep the feeders filled. I also buy Tonic Seed from Lady Gouldians site and
I make my own egg food. I also buy the bags of dried meal worms and grind them
up and mix with the bird seeds.

Good Luck!!

ranchnanny what is it about this brand that attracts you to it? nutrients? Mine like the Kaytee but seem to ignore all the bright colored pellets pieces.. which is what prompted me to ask this question.. Plus, both my parents are so young, I fear they may molt with the female chick....

I recently got some of this to try and it seems to be popular with my Javas and Society finches.

It has pieces of flowers and other goodies in it.

NanaJennie the seed from Roose Green Solutions is a mix of millets and they are fresh. Foosa101 is a member of the forum and she started sending samples. I couldn't keep that seed in the hoppers.

The seed from Wingin it has everything in it even dried greens.

Try them and I am sure your birds will love it and love you for giving it to them.

I had been mostly ordering seed mixes from herman bros seed...but a pet shop near by has started carrying hagen finch seed and the birds seem to approve. Herman bros seed is great, but I find myself paying more in shipping than the price of the seed itself. So, for now I am using Hagen seed as the main "base" seed and am mixing in birds r us, roose green solutions and some from herman bros depending on the species. I find that a lot of the bagged mixes from the pet shop have a lot of stuff in them that the birds will rarely eat. I have separate dishes for my own blend of dark seeds and this allows the birds decide what they want themselves.

I like simple mixes without all the tiny colored pellets that the birds just do not eat. Freshness is the key, if it sprouts for you it's fresh.

The seed with pellets pre-mixed in it seems to go to waste. The pellets are usually to big and hard. I use a mix of parakeets seed, brown top and Japanese millet and add Roudybush Nibbles pellets to it, birds down it.

Nancy and I did a test a couple of years back...this is the thread on the FF. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A ... =WAQGK_iJA

She is also on facebook... this is her website http://www.roosegreensolutions.com/inde ... mixes.html

I use Nederland Vita seed by the Higgins Co. as my staple and mix in 50:50 a different brand every now and then. I like to change things up a bit. And of course, plenty of fresh greens, fruits and veggies that are seasonally appropriate. Bob

I use Scotts Morning Song Wild Finch Food. It's various millets and canary seed, no junk or filler. I use to use this many years ago when I was raising Zebras. I was looking for the best seed mix that worked with the budget. I now have alot of different species of finches and they all eat and love this mix with next to no waste. It comes in a 8lb. bag for about $8.99 at Pet Smart in the wild bird food dept. I also by 25lbs of white millet for about $18.00 from Southern States. I mix 1:1 Scotts & White millet. Works great with the budget and best of all all my birds eat it :D . I also give Cut Oats to the Javas in a separate dish along with the mix seed. They all get fresh greens ( usually Romain Lettuce) almost daily.
