Judy, that makes such sense, explains so many things. The mother was probably aware of it, though you couldn't see it. I can't imagine it being the timothy hay itself, but when hay is baled, whatever is lying around in the pasture may also get baled in the hay. Or perhaps it was just a very fine piece from the string that is used to bale hay. But that must be a tiny consolation, knowing what caused all the baby's problems.
