I also use large plant saucers, with a smaller dish in middle. This is the dish I fill up and then the doves come and scatter the seed into the saucer for me, lol. It definitely helps to keep the majority of the split seed clean.

I have seed cups in mosft of mine. I put an egg/vegetable/eggshell mix in some black 4x6" plastic trays and place it on the bottom of the cage. The finches seem to like it and it's cute to see them all climb on/in to eat.
