Can I feed Soybean to finches?

Post by Bhatta » Wed May 22, 2013 9:02 am

It is known to everyone that that soybean is a cheap but good source of protein. The gold standard for measuring protein quality, since 1990, is the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) and by this criterion soy protein is the nutritional equivalent of meat, eggs, and casein. Soybean protein isolate has a biological value of 74, whole soybeans 96, soybean milk 91, and eggs 97. Raw soybean may be toxic. Can we feed boiled soybean seeds to finches? Or, can we use soybean milk to soak seeds or bread/biscuit? Nutrition experts are requested to share their knowledge.

I used to use soybeans when raising Uromastyx lizards. I bought the bags of de-shelled frozen and warmed them. They downed them quickly and they benefited from them...I brought them in to show a breeder and he said they looked excellent, great color and filled out. He started using them on his Uromastyx. fed them soybeans once or twice a week along while other veggies and fruit.

As far as birds go, I would try a small amount on them warmed, chopped. They are high in protein but the also be aware that there are some effects regarding estrogen levels and soybeans....so feed sparingly.

I know this pertains to humans... http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ ... cts-of-soy
