Weavills in food

Post by THVCFINCHLADY » Fri Aug 30, 2013 3:33 pm

Hi, I am a novice finch mom. I take care of our aviary of 10 finches at my place of employment. This morning I found bugs in the food sack. A co-worker said they were weavills. I called a local pet store and they said to put the bag in the freezer and it would kill the weavills. My question is, will I have to keep the bag in the freezer from now on until all the food is gone?

Thank You,

Kim

Kim,
I always freeze the bird seed I order, which the vendor recommends for killing any bugs that make their way into the seed bags. I keep them in tupperware in the freezer and take them out as I use the container. So, I keep them in the freezer until I'm ready to use them for finches, but I don't keep them in the freezer once I've opened the container to use. I just keep it on the counter and have not had any problems with bugs with this method.

BTW Welcome to the Forum! It helps to add your location to your profile too, so people can address location specific issues that may come up with out finches.

If you can keep the majority of the seed in the freezer, that will make it easier to keep it free of bugs. You can do as Deborah suggested and just keep out a smaller amount that you feed from each day and keep the rest in the freezer. If it is not possible to keep it in the freezer all the time, keeping it in the freezer for a short while should deal with the bugs for now.

I keep my seed in petfood containers I bought at Petsmart that are supposed to be bug resistant. I don't have room to keep it all in the freezer all the time, but specialty seeds that aren't used as frequently do get stored in the freezer.

I have been told that a cotton ball dipped in orange oil and placed in the seed will prevent bugs.
