My yard is mostly taken up with a large pond and the rest is crushed rock. No lawn. I pitch the seeds around the base of two trees that get regular drip irrigation.
In our harsh dry desert climate and lousy soil the seed grasses only grow to around knee high. Seed sprays top out at 3 inches or so. There are dozens of varieties of millet so the size could also depend on which of the millets are in your seed mix.
Years ago my aunt bred budgies in the pacific northwest. With that mild climate and good soil the millet she grew for them would get chest high with very large seed sprays.

paul-inAZ Thats cool! Mine were pretty high when I pulled them (darn it) and the sprays are comparable to the ones buy in the store.

They are not touching them though! :?

I found the birds like the homegrown millet when it's green not the dried brown like you'd get in the stores. If you haven't tried, Jennie, try offering them when they're greener.
good luck

debbie276 Today is the first time they are interested in it, it might be because I haven't replaced the dried millet. Although this millet is not so green anymore... half green/half brownish

Just this morning I clipped off some other variety of seed grass that grew from the 'waste' seed I put out. It is not millet but has relatively long cascading fan like seed stems. Must have been something in their seed mix. It was still green-yellow and I had to use it before the wild birds got it.

Hung it in, leaves and all, and they are vigorously going after both the seeds and pecking at the leaves.

You are late in the season to plant much but it is still very much summer down here. Looking at 110 degrees next week. Summer is getting tiresome.

paul-inAZ Do you have a pic? I have found a few random weeds I am not familiar with.. I can only assume it is from the seed that I throw out for the wild birds. I am going to plant some millet hand hope it sprouts in the spring next year. Can't hurt right?

they are warming up to the millet I 'grew' today, but as mentioned earlier, I haven't replaced the spent sprays yet.

I'd send a couple of inadequate photos if I could figure out how to do it.

My simplistic guess is that if you see sparrows and other small wild birds picking at the seeds outside it is probably safe for finches.

I have a few Gouldians coming. One pair with nine!! eggs that is due to start hatching in a day or so. OMG, NINE!
Another pair are tearing the grass leaves into pieces, dipping them in water and carrying them into a nest. No eggs yet but it looks imminent.
Once it freezes over in Vermont c'mon down and pick out some.

Congrats of the gouldians. =D> Hopefully they will hatch and feed the babies. With that large a clutch, some may be DIS or the parents may toss some to manage the numbers to feed. But, you never know. Finches surprise us sometimes.
