meal worms

Post by kusinu » Fri Sep 20, 2013 2:39 pm

I've read some articles that mention the importance of meal worms in goldfinches diet, and I purchased the frozen one, but my finches didn't even look at them! Now I am going to try the dry mealworms but don't know the exact quantity and if they are given daily?

I bought freeze dried mealworms and bug mix. Mine weren't overly fond of it so now I am mixing it into my sprouted seed mix that I freeze along with other nutrients. They love it!

For the most part birds prefer live mealworms. You can "gut load" them with nutritious foods to ensure the birds are getting better options than just plain bran.

I 'gut load' mine with organic apples.
Nothing like real live mealworms! Get the 'minis' for finches.

They seem to love the newly shedded, 'whitish' ones better than the older, darker ones.

I used to "gut load" mealies with carrots for my gecko's. :)
