Sounds like the consensus is variety!

Calcium from different soluble grit sources dissolves at different rates. So it is best to offer a free choice soluble grit that contains multiple calcium sources such as oyster shell, egg shell, mollusk shell, etc. rather than a single source such as egg shell or oyster shell alone. This helps to maintain a more consistent supply of calcium in the digestive system for your finches to metabolize :)

I always have a large cuttle bone hanging in all the cages. The best way I've found to attatch them is to "thin out" a small rectangular area of the soft part with the tip of a sharp knife. this I do in the center of the bone towards the top. Thin it out about 3/4 of the way down to the "bone". I then stick the knife into the thin area and make two slits straight down and right through the "bone" about 1/2 inch apart. Use a large twist tie to secure it tightly through the slits and around two cage bars and twist tightly on the outside of the cage. They never come off - until the birds completely devour the cuttle bone.
During the breeding season, I give Calciboost, a rapidly absorbed, super concentrated liquid calcium/D3 supplement two to three times per week. Bob

hi, I am new here and just reading around about mineral supplements.
This a great point you mentioned I did not think about. Thank you for this great information. I was feeding with Oyster Shell Cal and cuttlebone but am now giving Abba mineral as well.
The Abba mineral is a true godsend and cant be beat price wise when ordering bulk direct.
