Do you feed zeb parents anything special?

Post by cntrymeadow » Sat Nov 01, 2008 10:47 am

Our finch pair's eggs hatched. I just took a brief peek this morning and saw several babies!!! They laid 5 eggs but Im not sure if the have all hatched yet.

We feed our finches:
Egg-cite seed
Millet
Egg Food (dried from the pet store)
Cuttlebone
Mineral Block
and so far they have only been interested in eating leaf lettuce..no other fruit or veggie.

Im also sprouting seeds today.

Is there something special we are supposed to be feeding the parent finches to make feeding the babies easier?
I could have sworn I read somewhere that there was but danged if I can find it again!

Im on the hunt for another bird cage for when the babies get old enough!

One of the best foods for babies is fresh, hard-boiled egg. I put the egg in my mini chopper and chop it up well, then you can add whatever you want to the egg. Usually they like it drier, so adding dried egg food makes it a better consistency. Mixing sprouted seed in with it works well, too.

Some people remove the shell before mashing, as they have experienced problems with the parents feeding pieces of shell to the babies, damaging the babies crop. I mash the whole egg, shell and all, and have not had any problems with it.

There are many recipes for homemade eggfood on the net. A good one is found at www.fairestfinches.com.

Keeping my fingers crossed that these eggs are fertile.. Wish I could tell. Scared to try and candle them.
