Birds drinking water

Post by Barb » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:08 pm

Wondering if tap water is okay to give Zebras or should it be boiled?
Or is bottled water better/safer?

With all the additives, I am leery of tap water. I have kept freshwater fish 10 years, and they put stuff in water you wouldn't believe! I have well water, so I have no problems. At the least I cant imagine ammonia or chlorine is good for birds!

I have a PUR filter on my faucet, which is "suppose to" remove many impurities from the water. I also add a drop of Avian Safe (by Zoo Med) to my birds water. So far...so good :)

Some people use bottled water, others tap.
There are a few threads on this. If you use the top search button you can find some pretty good info on water.

I am on county water (same as city water), and I use it straight from the tap. I think my water tastes fine, so I don't worry about it. I know some people live in areas where the tap water is not so good, so then bottled would probably be better. They say that most of the bottled water sold in the U.S. comes from city water sources anyway. I have a friend who installed an RO water system for his birds, I don't have that kind of money.

Barb
Hi there. I use tap water for my birds, dogs and cats. For a while I used Britta filtered but for some reason, my birds seemed to prefer city water. I even tried two dishes side by side and they drank the city water over the filtered.

I use tap water. If you are concerned about any chlorine additives, fill a pitcher with water and let it sit for a day or two. They chlorine will dissipate.

I use filtered tap water, or system has a double filter. If you are concerned as to what is in your water Home Depot had test kits, usually located near the front of the store on your way out the door.
