Millet Spray Availability

Post by DVBourassa » Fri Dec 19, 2008 8:21 pm

I'm a bit confused on how frequently to provide millet spray. Is this a daily part of the diet or a treat to be offered more occasionally?

I do it on a treat basis, since it is kind of expensive when you have a lot of birds, except for any cage that has babies in it. My Goldbreasts that just fledged now have spray millet available all the time, it is one of the first foods they will try to eat on their own. I also lay this spray millet on the bottom of the cage for babies, since they aren't quite agile enough to hang on to a hanging spray and eat at the same time!

I usually have it available in my finch cages. I can see how it would get expensive with lots of birds but I only change it when it is completely finished.

Spray millet should be offered as a treat. Nutritionally it does have it's benefits, but a lot of finches tend to eat it like candy and some will fill up on it instead of eating some of the other things they need in their diet.

Thanks for the replies. My new little birdies just finished off their first spray and I wasn't sure if I should put a new one in right away or wait a couple days for the next one. They are eating seed and have also sampled the homemade egg food. I'm going to introduce some greens as well tomorrow.

I only offer it once a week or so for my birds. It is good to know that it should be available for the babies at all times, I can imagine the fledglings prefering it and trying it first over seed and will make sure I make that mental note for future use :)

millet sprays are available to my birds all the time, both ripe and green.
the green ones are demolished almost immediately but the ripe sprays tend to last the whole day. the birds still go to the feed dishes for other seeds.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Well I usually have spray millet in my cage especially now that my birds have babies. What I do is to let them to eat the spray millet and when they finish I don’t put more spray millet until they finish the other kind of food that is available in the cage. This works for me very well. At the beginning they only ate spray millet but now they know that if they don’t eat the others seeds there will be no more candy ^_^. Just like kids.
