Hi Elana,
The Cedar did not put the birds off their seed.
My birds are too piggy!

Regarding freezing the seed and then trying to sprout it. It will work. I keep all my finches' and tiels' seed in a chest freezer. It srpouts just fine. And no bugs. My wild bird seed does get moths in it. The moths got in the house. Fly traps in each room cleaned up the moths.

Dunker817 knowing seed will sprout after being frozen is reassuring as far as nutrition is concerned. If have to store it in future I will freeze it.

Re: moths in airtight container
I'm a freezer-a-holic when it comes to seeds and bugs.
I haven't yet gotten into sprouting seeds, so I just buy a 5 pound bag of seeds (I have 5 birds) and keep it in the freezer permanently until the seeds are gone. I do it with all food I give the birds that I can freeze, millet, veg/herb mix... anything that could have a bug in it.
I have seed hoppers, so I just fill the hopper and the seeds will defrost in no time and be fine for the birds to eat... along with the dead little moths and moth eggs for extra protein.
Not a lot of room in the freezer so I can't really buy in bulk, but if you do buy in bulk you can store in a bug-containment manner that you like and take smaller, manageable portions in smaller containers to the freezer for 7 days prior to giving to the birds and that would do a bug-kill for you.
