Clover

Hi~

I have a huge field of clover by the apple trees.

Is it safe for them to eat? Do finches even like clover? If so would they even nibble on the flowers?

Clover is a medicinal herb and is safe. I let it grow in the backyard because the honey bees like it. But I have never noticed a wild bird eating it. My dogs will.

Here is a link to another thread on clover. White clover is what grows like a weed in my yard. It is a legume and is nutritious.

Clover is recommended quite often for birds, especially breeding birds as the plant is very nutritious. I grow clover in large seeding trays for my birds and they all love it! Quick and easy to grow or even better, go and pick it wild like you can. Just make sure there have been no pesticides sprayed anywhere near them.

if your birds don't show any interest at first, keep trying. They will soon realize it's quite yummy

I feed clover all the time, fresh and dried and they love it.

I have different sizes of clover that I see on my walks and on my lawn, but it's not flowering right now, so how do I know if it's red or white? Or does it really matter all that much?

Elana, both red and white clover is safe for the birds. From what I have read, the red clover is the more nutritious one.
