My Goldbreasted Waxbills actually prefer the small red millet over the other! I guess it depends on what type of finch you're feeding. I don't know enough to comment on which ones are best for the finches. I buy a mix and have no idea what most seeds in it are. Sorry.

to find out what other seeds your birds like try a small amount of each new seed in a seperate container. should be able to work out what is popular and what isn't by the amount of each that they eat. cant just rely on the results of a couple of days though, need to do it for a couple of weeks.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

Phat, my birds are not that fond of white millet, it's always the last to go (doves and quail love it though). If you have goulds mix some plain canary seed with that, I don't like the canary mix either.

But like mickp mentioned the best way is to provide the seeds separate in equal quantities over a period of time and see what they like.

When i had a small amount of birds i had seperate dishes for each seed. This became impracticable when i got more birds,so i mix my own now.

33% plain canary
25% french millet
33% red panicum shandy down with yellow when red is to expensive
10% jap millet

depending on what birds you have chuck in a little hulled oats.
during winter add a little rape and or linseed.probley only aprox 1% off these when needed.

the amount of each that they eat, will vary during the year.but I stick to this recipie all year.

Plus sprouted seed and seeding grass as a extra.
adiction is better than cure
