How much seed per day per bird?

Post by Louys » Sun Apr 24, 2016 6:23 pm

My Gouldians eat pretty much everything now, except haven't offered worms yet. Can't seem to find worms for birds, just for lizards.
I sprout the seeds and like giving them just as much as they need for the day so that I can wash the dish for the following day. Haven't figured out how much seed should I give per bird, per day.

Louys

I free feed, so I couldn't say.

Regarding worms for Gouldians. My Gouldi's, only eat live mealworms, when housed with other species that readily consume mealworms (like Parrotfinches, or Waxbills ).

If you want to incorporate mealworms into their diet, I buy the freeze dried ones, pulverize them, then mix them into their hard boiled egg food. You can get bags of them at Walmart (in the bird department ), for something like $8.00.

I give approx 1 teaspoon per bird per day.
But this is just an average, and you need to judge based on YOUR birds and their environment. You should have enough food, that if they are extra hungry, or need more food (like when it is cold), they won't starve.

Also the seed dish/tray should be large enough (or have more than 1 seed dish/tray) that they can always find fresh seeds. Once a dish has a layer of seed hulls, they won't dig down under the hulls to fresh seeds, and could starve.
