success! I took their regular seed out of their feeding dish and put in the egg food mixed with a bit more seed and they are eating it! the male is still "redecorating" the nest so I am oping one of these days the female will lay eggs!

Ok, I would like to feed my new pair of Gouldies some real egg, can someone tell me, can I hard boil it and mash it up the night before and give it to them for breakfast? will the egg keep for 8 or so hours in the fridge? i don't want to make the kids sick.....

As long as it is refrigerated, I don't see a problem. Hardboiled eggs in the shell can stay in the fridge for several days, so mashed ones should be fine for 8 hours or so. I sometimes have eggfood leftover after I dish it out, so I will put the excess in a small container, refrigerate it, and serve it the next day--never had a problem with it.

I have also frozen the mashed up hardboiled egg in small containers. I mix it with corn meal so it's a bit dry and crumbly. Then I can take the container of frozen, and just use a fork to break it up, put in fridge overnight and feed the next day. So far no problem, though they aren't huge eggfood eaters... maybe they prefer fresh?

Actually no, they don't seem to prefer it either way. They just nibble a bit, but love the bits of eggshell in it.

I boil my eggs about 15 at a time and I have a small chopper that I use to chop the eggs and then I put the amount I feed a day and put in the little snack plastic bags and freeze they last for a long time that way and I just thaw one bag for the next day before I feed I put whatever into the eggfood and feed, soaked seed ,broccoli chopped fine,egg shells ,powdered kelp etc.

Im still giving my finches the mashed egg with shell, i sprinkle millet on it..... they eat the millet but still won't eat the eggfood yet.i give them eggcite food they eat that seed no problem.

I basically do the same as Bill in that every weekend I boil a dozen eggs at a time and have about 8 cups of soaked seed ready (pre-soaked for 24 hours). I process the eggs & shells (4 at a time) in my food processer and pour into a large bowl to which I add the well rinsed and drained soaked seed. I mix them together and put into Ziplok baggies (these typically last me 1 week). I freeze them and as I need them during the week, I put one in the fridge to thaw overnight. In the morning I pour the baggie contents into a plastic container and add a teaspon of Cod Liver Oil plus a teaspoon of Wheat Germ Oil. Mix well and then add about 1 cup of Orlux Egg Food (with insects, fish and crustaceans!). Mix it all up and serve it to my finches every morning. What I don't use goes into the fridge and will last me about 3 days. Those with babies get a refill when I get home at 4pm. All my finches DEVOUR this daily and some actually wait at the cage doors for me to bring it to them.

Adding a dash of garlic powder should help to get your birds interested in your egg food. Most finches are attracted to the smell of garlic, and it's good for them to boot.

I too tried a different approach this morning - using garlic powder, too. Not sure what it was the little ones liked so much, but they sure seemed to like it!

I cracked an egg in a cup and shredded some zucchini, broccoli, and carrots into it. I have a TINY little grater - I think it might be meant for parmesean cheese - and it makes tiny little shreds! I added a pinch of garlic salt and mircowaved it until it was done. Then, I ground some fresh parsley, basil and lemon balm in a coffee grinder and mixed that all in. Then I added some commercial dry egg food, some ground Zupreem Natural pellets, and some ground egg shells. I added a couple little tiny cubes of apple and grape, some red palm oil, and some Neckton-bio. Mixded mixed mixed and then sprinkled a little seed on top to get them interested and they DOVE in!

I'm crediting the garlic powder!

Wow--I don't work that hard to feed finches, dogs, cats, horses, and myself!
