What to feed Gouldian

Post by ahoang25 » Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:25 am

Hi,

I am looking to buy in large quality of finch and canary foods. I have 12 gouldian and 6 canary in a large avary. The seeds and spray millets that I buy at Petsmart and Petco are in small quality.

Where can I buy large quality of seeds ( mixed, diets, vitamins, etc.) and spray millets? Also, what foods would you recommend that I buy? Any good places online?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Anthony

Check to see if there is a Bird Mart near you. I've gotten good deals on bulk bags of seeds (general finch, gouldian specific and canary).

See if there is a PetFood Express near you. The one near me will special order pellets for me. Prices are reasonable and you save on the shipping.

Because ordering from the east coast, the shipping to the west coast will cost almost or as much as the seeds. So you have to order BULK to get the shipping cost (per pound of seed) down.

See if you can find a bird club in your area. Some bird clubs are able to do bulk orders and save a lot that way. Also, check with feed stores in your area to see if any of them would order just what you need when they place their regular orders with the distributor. Watch out for seed that may sit on a shelf for a long time and not be fresh any longer.

As Gary said, bird marts are a great place to get seed, and at good prices. At many marts, there will be one vendor that specializes in selling seed, so they have a big variety to offer.

For spray millet, why don't you contact Golden Farm Products direct, and see how much they would charge to ship to you. They are in California, so it might not be so bad, and this is the farm that produces such excellent spray millet. Their address: http://www.californiaspraymillet.com.

Sally, I checked out the californiaspraymillet website already. They only sale spray millets. I am looking to buy seeds and spray millets at the same time to save on shipping cost. Also, there are no bird marts in my area.

What seeds would you recommend for my gouldian and canary? I need diet seed, any healthy seed, and so forth.

Tiffany, thank you for letting me know about Herman Bros. Pet Products. I have been very happy about how they help me fine tune my seed order according to the seeds my birds prefer. They do sell spray millet at a resonable price, it is on page 3 of the seed lists.

Yeah I think they are great :)
The reason I didn't order from them before is I was told the seed tended to be rancid but that has not been the case for me at all, I'm even getting my basic mix to sprout in less than 48 hours - so for me it seems the majority of the seed I'm getting is fresh.
Plus, the woman I always get on the phone when I order is SO sweet and patient with me and my mix creations lol..

I believe I have dealt with her husband, Richard several times and his wife once. Both are very nice and very helpful. Their seed smells wonderful and the birds love it.

Anthony,
A place that is closer to your neighborhood is Silver Song West. I have dealt with these ladies and they are great... reasonable and the stuff is fresh. They are not only a seed retailer but they have massive aviaries that they feed. I always find the paeople that are into breeding and rearing usuaslly have fresh seed :D
25 pounds gouldian mix is only $19.89
and 25 lbs millet spray is under $53..... check them out :D

I still order some from them though the shipping kills me since I am in Florida... but I like them :D

I need to know what particular seeds (diets, nutrient, etc.) or other products I will need to buy. Can you provide me the names of these products.

Thank you.

Anthony
