Why do you ad wheat germ oil and cod liver oil? What are their benefits? Does cornmeal have any benefits? How fine is the cornmeal you use?Sally wrote:I leave my boiled egg mixture in all day. I make mine quite dry anyway, and by the end of the day, it is completely dry.
Everyone's stove and pans will be different, so you just have to figure out what works for you. I bring 12 eggs to a rolling boil in a 3-quart pan, then turn the heat off and let them sit for 15 minutes. This is a ceramic stovetop, so it continues to retain heat, even after I turn off the knob. Then I run cold water into the pan till I can handle the eggs, and let them continue to cool and dry in my dish drainer. I mash them while still warm, as I feel they better absorb the wheat germ oil and cod liver oil that I add before adding the dry ingredients.
I change out what I add from time to time--nestling food, handfeeding formula, dry commercial eggfood, yellow cornmeal (small amount). This way, the birds are not shocked when their eggfood isn't exactly the same every day. Sometimes, I give them dry commercial eggfood, so that if I am out of town, they hopefully will accept the dry stuff.

Wheat germ oil is rich in vitamin E, which is good for stimulating breeding. Cod liver oil has vitamins A and D. However, Roy Beckham (www.efinch.com) no longer adds cod liver oil to his eggfood, as he found it less stable than wheat germ oil (or breeding tonic). I think I am going to try leaving out the cod liver oil--even keeping it in the refrigerator, it gets a strong odor and can quickly go rancid.Rispa wrote:Why do you ad wheat germ oil and cod liver oil? The cornmeal (enriched yellow) is supposed to contain extra niacin. I only use it as a drying agent, as it seems to work well for that purpose, though often I leave out the cornmeal entirely. I prefer to use dry commercial eggfood or nestling food as a drying agent, as these products are high in nutrition by themselves and don't dilute the nutrition of my eggfood like cornmeal would do, IMO.

Re: Boiled egg
I get mine from a local health-food store that also carries groceries. One of our Texas grocery chains (H.E.B.) is carrying it now, but my health-food store has a cheaper price. Check around in your area for grocery chains that are aimed at the organic market, they also might carry this.
And remember, there is no such thing as a dumb question, we all learn from each question.

Good luck finding any in Canada that doesn't cost you and arm and a leg to have shipped. If you find any locally - let me know!tinysparrow wrote:Sally, this may be a dumb question, but where can you get wheat germ oil?

I order WGO via Amazon.com from the USA.
