Re: I'm hand feeding Gouldian chick.
Well, Nicky is going a bit longer between feedings. I can sleep from about 11pm till 6am. My 'onion eyes' are getting back to normal. I feel like I'm on vacation..
Boy it's a wriggler. It almost jumped out of my hand. For the first time, I think we're going to make it.
Now for my next act!
I have never banded a chick before, but I guess it's time and this one would be a good candidate. Lots of 'firsts' here.
I'm anxious for feathers and colors and eyes opening, but will have to wait awhile for that.

Yes, those babies can throw themselves around and right out of your hand--no wonder babies fall out of shallow nests! Do you have closed bands in size D, Judy? If not, I can always send you one. If you aren't doing closed, you can wait till the baby is older to do split.

Re: I'm hand feeding Gouldian chick.
Thanks for the offer of the band, Sally. Unfortunately, little Nicky died this morning. I have no idea what happened. It wouldnt eat and was making motions like it was trying to peep but there was no sound. I don't know if it aspirated some food or what. I am devastated. I can't believe how bonded I became to this little creature in such a short time. I could see it was struggling and St. Anthony and St. Francis were called upon for help. I guess there was a bigger plan for Nicky. I am filled with guilt and keep rerunning the care I gave over and over wondering what I did wrong. It looked like it was doing so great. Just a lesson to let us know how quickly things can go south with these delicate little things. Well, needless to say, I can get all the sleep I want now!

That's so sad, I am sorry to hear it. You did what you could, and Nicky had more of a chance than he would have otherwise had!

Credit to you Judy, you guys that hand feed are amazing. I've never been put in that position yet and fingers crossed I never will be and I hope I would do the same but would be incredibly scared I think!
Sending you lots of energy!

Re: I'm hand feeding Gouldian chick.
So sorry for your loss, Judy. It is difficult to handfeed, and often they develop a yeast infection and go downhill fast. You do get so attached to them, more than with any other babies, so it is even more devastating when you lose them. I think sometimes the parents toss because they know there is something wrong, or the babies get injured when they are tossed, and so they are doomed already when you start feeding them.
I recently lost my little BCCB that I was handfeeding. I fed it for 35 days, so I couldn't believe it when it didn't make it. Didn't want to eat one evening, in bad shape the next morning, and gone a few hours later. But when I thought about it, that baby simply wasn't developing as it should. It looked fine, but though it had fledged, it could only fly several feet straight out from me, and then it would flutter to the ground. Even handfed fledglings normally will quickly be zooming around the room, so there was something wrong.

Sorry for your loss and apologies that my previous post appeared after he passed, not sure how this happened as I posted it earlier in the conversation.
