Cool. I think I know what you're talking about... Will check it out tomorrow. Panty hose was too difficult... How do you pick from all those choices in colors?

Is it hard and do you need a place to be hot?

Paul, no it's very easy. I leave mine to sprout on the kitchen counter, out of direct sunlight. Once they have started sprouting, you can move them to the fridge.

Re: What do you sprout?

I make a huge batch up each time and then freeze daily amounts in Ziplock bags, with rest of my veg and softfood mix.
Birds don't mind raw defrosted veg, and it saves me the grief of having to sprout daily.
Though I do like the jar and mesh/pantyhose idea. Nice for simple small sprouting.

Can I assume that because these are living plants, they won't spoil as quickly when you put them out for the birds to eat? Fresh egg food goes bad rather quickly. Does putting a little moisture under the sprouts help them stay fresh longer while they are being fed? I'd like to pick the food out of the cage before bacteria starts... Thanks.

Re: What do you sprout?
I rinse the sprouts daily before feeding and add grapefruit seed extract to the water, which is an anti microbial. The feeding dish I use, I rinse it and then leave a few drops of the water in the bottom before putting the seeds in. I also mix my sprouts with the greens I offer, which is usually kale or the like, and then I sprinkle their vitamins on that and mix it up to incorporate the vitamins onto all the surfaces. If they don't eat it all, it just tends to dry out, but most of the time there isn't any left.

Re: What do you sprout?
I just found it at Whole Foods ~ but it's in capsule form and pretty expensive. They suggested that I go to a health food store instead, where you can get it in a bottle with a dropper. I also buy my kelp powder bulk at this HFS, so I'll pick the extract up the next time I shop for supplies.

Re: What do you sprout?
Great news is that the seeds in the jar with the hose cover held down with a rubber band works beautifully! Rinsing twice a day is important as the liquid starts to smell mighty earthy: not funky, simply very rich and organic.
Last question on this ~ then I'll have the new routine under my belt.
How much growth do you allow your sprouts in order to gain maximum nutrition? Is it simply when there's a network of shoots? Or should I wait until there are leaves forming? Does it differ between seed types?
Thanks! (Perhaps next year I'll master insect larvae...)
