Koko and lovezebs - We had that type of plantain as well as the broadleaf plantain (p. major) in Germany, too. Both of them also grow here in California. The broadleaf one showed up in my lawn a few years ago and I transplanted some young plants into a container in my aviary. Now my birds can pick the developing seeds at whichever stage of ripening they like best.

Here are some pictures that I found of the weeds, and wild grass seed heads that I pick for my guys (or at least something similar anyway).

Good morning Elana - you are so lucky to have such a large variety of grasses and weeds! Here, they are almost all done for this year. Look for 'shepherd's purse' when you are out walking again. It's a pretty small weed (easily overlooked), but finches usually love these seeds, too.
Have a great day, Iso

Good morning Iso.
I will definitely keep my eyes open for some Shepherd's Purse, but first have to look Iit up and see what it looks like, :-).

We are still good on weeds and grasses here, eventhough we did have a very dry Spring and begining of Summer. We have had rain lately, but it's sporadic and comes with hail (although my immediate area has been very lucky so far in that regard). Some parts of Calgary and surrounding areas, have had golf ball sized hail, and even a small tornado (that luckily didn't hurt anyone, and didn't cause much damage). A small hamlet/town just East of Calgary, had some serious flooding because of a sudden downpour that hit them.

Hope you have a nice week.

It does not occured to me that you can have another type of vegetation, that's right!
I didn't know how to say it in English to call it properly; this is a plant which I was thinking about: Image
but it also have a version with narrow leaves:
Image
All of the grasses which images you posted we have in Poland, but for now there are only toys for my zebras :D
But they like salad from dendelion, plantain and purple clover with addition of plainatin weeds. I think I should find chicweed, it is very common plant in Poland, but I even I didn't dream that zebras can eat it.

Thank you for shepherd purse. It is really not difficult to find them on polish meadows. So, I will be picking up the hearts as I call them

Here's our hillside as of today. Don't mind the hairy weed in one picture, he just had to get his ear in the picture. The weeds are higher than my waist, and I'm five foot five.
