I also have heard that microwaving is not as effective.I put all mine in the oven for apro 20 minutes at 200 c,if i only have a couple and the ovens not going,I nuke them, and when I get a collection I then oven them all together. My eggs are home gown so they are not as clean as bought ones.

I'm with Finchie. I boil mine, then crush them all together. Gives me a chance to use my mortar and pestle. :)

When I said I nuke my egg shells - that's only the eggs I use for human consumption - ie scrambled eggs or whatever - where I crack the egg open and use the liquid egg for us leaving the shell.

The eggs I hardboil for the finches - I cool completely then remove the shell (including the lining), place in the food processer and run for a few seconds then I add the hardboiled egg and process that along with the shell for a few more seconds. Just a couple of seconds for the egg as too long and it will get too wet.

Whew! This whole debate was actually making me think I should hardboil the egg and THEN nuke the shells.
A trio of happy zebs.

Glad I could clarify for you. Hardboiling AND nuking would be doing double-duty.

When I hard boil eggs,I nuke my shells for two minutes only because it drys them up and they grind up better,I put some in eggfood and put some in with my oyster shell
I think that they are safe after you hardboil them anyway

When you m/wave the eggs, do you put them in water?

Always been too scared to m/wave eggs, thought they would explode!

Since it's only the halves or pieces of egg shell that is being microwaved, they won't explode. If you put a whole egg in the microwave, then yes, chances are it will.

I try to make sure most of the egg yolk is out (wipe it out with your finger if necessary) of the shell before placing in the microwave.

I hard boil my eggs, and then use the food processor to mash for me. I never feel like I get the shell small enough for the little guys when I do it by hand and it is pretty easy to clean my processor, just throw it into the dish washer :)

I keep all my egg shells when we make breakfast or food for the children. I wash the insides making sure that all the raw egg white is out. Then I microwave for 2-3 minutes on full power.

To crush them I first use a meat tenderising hammer or roll a full wine bottle over them - that gets them nice and fine.

I also add a couple of teaspoons to my wet food mix and offer some shell only as free choice to my birds.

Just an FYI - egg shells do not need to be pulverized or made really fine. Finches like chipping bits off the larger pieces of shell too. It's another activity to keep them busy too. My Gouldians rarely just sit on their perches watching the world go by... like my Strawberry Finches do.

I read on another site that it's dangerous to nuke the shells because it's not enough weight or something and could cause an explosion. Ever since then I have been afraid to just nuke the shells by themselves. Maybe it would work if you were microwaving something else at the same time? I have a very high powered microwave. Anyway, I boil all my eggs.I only wanted to put them in the mic to get the shells more crispy.
