Do you have a German background Fran? My parents are German, were farmers... through the depressiion and ate all that plus pork hawks (sp?) and sourkraute (which of course I HATED too). Mom has often told me that her father never threw out food that went moldy - just cut off the mold part and ate the rest!

Oh, Liz, I would give my eye-teeth for some good pork hocks (schweinehachsen). When my parents lived in Germany, we often went to a restaurant that specialized in this dish. Sounds disgusting, but it really isn't, just good pork, and they served it with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and fresh grated horseradish--heaven!

No...but a WASP through and through. (English) Just family that came from a farm background in Manitoba, though I personally grew up in Winnipeg which is a fair sized city (about 800,000).

ShaneW.....here is a list of what is in the Herb Salad:

Herb Salad has the following 22 Herbs:
Astragalus - immune system, digestion, energy, kidneys
Barberry - antiseptic, respiratory, blood purifier, liver
Chickweed - C, B, D, Anti-inflammatory, stomach, respiratory
Dandelion - stomach, vitamins, potassium, calcium, kidneys
Echinacea - antibiotic, antiviral, immunity, vitamins, proteins
Elderberry - respiratory, anti-inflammatory, blood, appetite
Garlic - antifungal, antioxidant, fertility, heart
Kelp - iodine, thyroid, stimulant, mucous membranes
Lavender - digestion, essential oils, stress, metabolism
Licorice - expectorant, liver, anti-inflammatory, flavor
Marshmallow - wounds, calcium, diuretic, demulcent, tonic
Milk thistle - liver repair, heart, lungs, circulation, worms
Oatstraw - calcium, magnesium, yeast infections, thyroid
Olive leaf - feather problems, improves the will to live
Pau d’ arco - blood cleanser, fights infections, liver, candida

Our finches LOVE Herb Salad. We developed a proprietary mix of our Premium Finch Blend seed, Herb Salad, and Miracle Meal that finches tend to go nuts over. We call it Miracle Herb Seed.

I like the MHS because it reduces the number of dishes we have to use/clean and provides an almost complete diet in one package.

Michele, do you use any special dishes in the breeding cages that they cannot poop into? Or do you simply scrap off the top layer now and then, like I do?

Hi, Liz!

Since we've converted to walk-in flights for all but a few pair of societies (kept in case we need blue caps or swees fostered), we offer the Miracle Herb Seed in a soda bottle feeder suspended on a chain from the ceiling of each flight and put Palm Oil Meal and Convenience mix in 6 oz treat cups which are hung about half-way up on the door of each flight. Small plates (about twice the size of a half dollar) of eggfood/mealworms are set on the floor of the flights away from perches so the birds can't poop in them. Water fountains/Buddies sit on a coated wire shelf on the floor of the flights. The shelves are just tall enough that goulds and blue caps can stand on the floor and still drink out of them. The swees have to perch on the shelf to drink. So, there's not much in the flight they could poop in.

In the cages of societies, we just have two cage cups -- one of Palm Oil Meal and one for Convenience Mix -- along with the soda bottle feeder and a Water Buddy. Societies poop in EVERYTHING so, yes, we toss Palm Oil Meal when they soil it (actually we feed it to our chickens) and remove the top layer of Convenience Mix when it's soiled.

That sounds awesome! I assume you are buying this and not making it yourself. I haven't seen anything like that here,will have to do some research.

I love the story about the starving Gouldfinches. My dad is a pastor so when we would complain about a meal in our youth, there were 7 of us, my dad would pull out the pictures of starving children from Africa. They would always make me sad but it didn't make me like pea soup any more than I did :o)

I bought the herb salad off from the LadyGouldianFinch sight and yes, I love the smell too. I have only tried it in a seperate cups though and although I try to leave the Gouldians alone most of the day, when I am up there I haven't seen them eat it. The canary that I bought yetsreday went over and nibbled for a very quick second though.

It does make you want pizza! :o) or Italian food :o)

Jimlas,

Our finches took awhile but now seem to like it.

We first tried feeding it alone in a seperate feed dish and they didn't really seem into it so we started to add some into their seed. Slowly, it seemed like they were picking at it and today we noticed that they are eat it.
