I have fed my birds iceberg lettuce in the past with no ill effects. It's just that it isn't as nutritious. I prefer romaine, kale, or leaf lettuce. I haven't tried mustard, turnip, and collard greens, but I will. Any veggies in excess can cause problems. What's funny to watch is when you put in a small leaf, and two finches will get on either side of it and play tug-of-war. If there are any nests available, the greens may eventually wind up in a nest.

What ???
I love all the new information I just got from reading this post string, but I have some questions! I feel like that caveman on TV..."What do you mean, G---O is so easy a caveman can do it??
What is salad cress? Spring Mesulun mix? Is that what they're called in the market?
How do you roast squash guts, and what kind of squash do you use. There are so many? When you say "guts" do you mean the stringy stuff or just the seeds?
I know the lima beans was a school project on how to sprout them, but do the finches like sprouted lima beans?

OMG I'm 54 yrs old and I feel like you all are talking if a foreign language here! LOL!
PS: I read the "safe food" page that was mentioned on here and found it very confusing! They list foods to give the birds, then tells you how dangerous they can be. Should they be given or not? How much is too much? When does a food go from safe and good for them to dangerous and deadly? Things like spinach or lettuce and beans are on the list that way! I'm sorry but I'm kind of lost here at the moment!

Cheese -never thought of that
I have some cheddar, it never occurred to me Finches would like this. They love hard boiled egg - mostly the yolk but you have to remove it soon as they're done so that it doesn't spoil. In some seed I purchased there is an occasional raisin. ? They have no idea what to do with it, and sometimes one of them flings it for fun. Like a Finch Football ha ha. Had to feed them some Keet food with oats n' groats in it - they eat around the big seeds much to the delight of the keets who eat the leftover goodies. Lettuce is a big hit with the Zebras often one steals the entire leaf that's 3 times bigger than itself. On movie night, I toss some plain air popped popcorn in the cage and each of them grabs their very own piece. Super funny to watch! Thanks for posting new food ideas, we'll give some new things a try.
Bird faces always make me smile.
