Newbie here, reading great fun, informative posts :) My Society male, who I've only had for two weeks, seems to like spinach and broccoli, but hasn't touched offerings of shredded carrot, yam or apple.

I have been finely slicing the baby spinach and tearing the broccoli floret into teeny pieces and he immediately checks out the goods when sprinkled over a piece of white paper towel. He reminds me of old farmer John, chewing on his piece of hay LOL.

So I'm wondering what size should the veggies/fruit be that I present to him? I see in your pics lovezebs, that there seems to be a variety of sizes of food offered. Do I need to finely dice/mince everything like I've been doing?

Oh, and any suggestions on how to get him to eat his vitamins? I've tried sprinkling over his greens (the ones he likes) but he won't touch them if I do. If I add to his waterer, he'll just drink out of his bird bath. Argh! #-o

I don't add vitamins to the water, as I worry that they won't drink as much. I add vitamins to my egg food, and they eat that quite well. My birds also don't care for fruit, but they love broccoli. Try slicing some rounds of cucumber, it is not very nutritious but birds love cucumber.

Hi Sally..

My guys drink their water (with vitamins) like dehydrated camels. I actually did an experiment and placed vitamin water in a tube beside plain water. They drank the vitamin water, left the plain water til after. I add very little multi vitamin drops to their water though. A multi vit drop or two into a tube of water one day, and a drop of vita sol into a tube of water on alternative days.

I tried to add the vitamins into the food. They didn't like it.

Perhaps it's this particular vitamin he doesn't like? It's a dry powder and smells fruity, turns orange when mixed with water. I find it settles out at the bottom of the tube and gunks up the valve. Not many options on vitamins locally, so would be interested in the name brands of the ones recommended that I may be able to order online (or have the very helpful owner of a local pet supply bring in for me).

Just goes to show that these birds will decide what they want. Each of us has to work out the program that works for our birds and for ourselves. The saying 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' certainly applies to our hobby!
