Good evening your majesty - Elana, I just checked the website for Rainbow Mealworms (rainbowmealworms.net). That's who I buy mine from: $7 for 1000! They say that they do ship to Canada, but I don't know how much the shipping and handling charge would be. Might be worth it to call and find out. They have different sizes and quantities available. If this turns out to be affordable, you might have to put your crown back into storage. :-)

Oh your Mighty Mealworm-iness...

Oh I can't. You're too much. I'd say something about Gladiator Gouldians but I think Majestic (or is it Mutant) Mealworms speak for themselves.

Speaking of Gouldians...will your's eat them? Mine never touch them.

This made me laugh out loud. But I also am not afraid of insects.

Anyways, thanks for the laugh.

Rox I keep some of mine in a fishtank and I promise you they do fly. The other trays that I have have lids, have they can't fly away.

Sally
Hi Sally,

I got my containers and put oeatmeal in there (couldn't find bran that day), with several worms in each of the three.

Ok, so do I put in carrots and potatos now, or do they eat the cereal first?

Debbie suggested, newspaper on top and misting it. Is that something that you do as well? I wouldn't want everything to mold over, so not sure.

I had a lady in a petstore try to offer me mealworms, or some equivalent (Blech!!) when she found out I had finches (all two of them!) and a canary. My birds are firmly on a seed diet (with greens, fruit etc). No creepy crawlies!!!! Yuck!!!

lovezebs How big are those containers? I probably would put all the mealworms in one container, saving the others for future generations. I start offering potato and/or carrot as soon as I put the mealworms in the container, but once they turn into pupa, take out all the veggies (pupa don't eat). I've never done the newspaper thing, it is used to offer moisture. When you have mealworms shipped to you, they come in a cloth bag with lots of crumpled newspaper, and it is obvious they have eaten some of that paper during shipping. I just rely on the veggies to provide moisture. Some sites warn against the veggies molding, but I've never had a problem with it.

^:)^ I hail your majesty, Queen of the Mealies! ^:)^

I considered growing them, but I'm certain I'd get attached.

In elementary school, we studied the lifecycle of mealworms. I believe it was in the first grade? We started with mini mealies who lived in a clear plastic box, stuck to the corner of my school desk with double-stick tape.

So we watched the little mealworms grow up into beetles. And then, the teacher went to set them free outdoors. I lost. my. shizz.
I grew those beetles from a baby!
I'd NAMED them!
Now, this evil teacher is going to set my beetles free into the cold, cruel, dangerous world? No friggin way!
I started crying and begged the teacher to let me take mine home. She wouldn't let me and even checked my little clear box to ensure I'd released them. (Who DOES that?! Now as an adult, I realize how evil that teacher was. I'd have sent the kid home with her beetles! Let the parents deal with it.)

After school, I went to the spot where we released them. I had placed some leaves and a couple small sticks inside my little sandwich box. I was hoping I could find my beetles and take them home. But they were gone. I cried all the way home. I was so upset.
My parents even took me to the playground after dinner to look for the beetles again. I never did find them. (But bless my parents for helping me look for my beloved beetles!)

Oh, the trauma! (Seriously! It had to be traumatic if I remember this event 25 years later!)
So not sure I could raise mealies and watch my birds squeeze the guts out like toothpaste. LOL

So I shall leave the mealie raising to you, Your Majesty.
I'm going to send you a crown woven from fresh branches, with a few dead beetles glued on there for good measure.
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.
