Dried fruits and Veggies

Franny, do you peel the potatoes before boiling or do you boil with the skin on then peel the skin away? I scrub the potatoes well and boil skin on then peel skins and mash.

Once I make them I put them in the oven with a little butter on top and bake while the rest of the dinner cooks. They are done when the top is golden brown.

Here is my recipe for egg food and none is wasted by any of my birds. In fact I have to fill the dishes twice a day and for me its only a day and half supply.

6 jumbo eggs blended, 1/4 cup miracle meal, 1/4 cup bag o bugs or gammarus patee (which ever I have available at the time), 1/4 cup pretty bird fruit pellets. Every other batch I add a 1/2 tea spoon of coco loro. Also ocassionally mineral powder and cuttle bone. Every single one of my birds eats this formula.

Why would you do that? Is it easier? What do you peel the cooked ones with? Would an ordinary potato peeler work?

Thanks John...I think I will keep trying the egg on the RCCBs and Gold Breast. I am also wondering if they would take it once they have young that hatch and just don't want it now. they are eating their usual food and ABBA egg food that I mix with ground pellets, Golden Orlux or Miracle Meal.

I may try ordering some of the dried powders or see if the grocery has them. The ones from Berry Farms are organinc.

The skin pulls right off after you boil them. I usually cut one in half to test to make sure they are really soft. I've done this a few time when making potato salad. It saves time, if I am rushed.

Ok ladies, I'm off to Walmart on Sunday to buy a potato ricer....thinking maybe just maybe, the shaftails will thinks its mealworms and I can wean them off the little buggers.

Janine I think the shaftails are real flingers when it comes to mealworm...they are all over the place!!! Mine will raise young on egg foods and or mealies. Eggs are cheeper!!!!

I use either a potato ricer or garlic press to make the egg look like worms. if I have a lot I use the ricer, just a few, the garlic press works just as well.
Oh yeah, it saves on band-aids too!! LOL

I bought one a long time ago after you mentioned it once on the yahoo group and I can't for the life of me see how it really works? It seems to waste more egg then push thru? Is there a trick to it?

I have always grated my boiled eggs with a cheese grater. This is the only way my birds will eat their eggfood. It looks like little worms and they love it that way. I have the cuts on my hands to prove it.

Donna..this is going to sound odd but what color dish/bowl do you use with the egg?

White.

I use all colors and they either eat it or don't. But I find 98% of my birds will eat it now.

Are you putting anything in the egg after you grate it? Or just feeding fresh egg plain?

Those bullets are great for pulverizing eggshells and cuttle bones

Sometimes wheat germ oil, grated, minced carrots, herbs, seed, pellets, broccoli tops, Hatched, corn meal, the kitchen sink!!!!

The one thing my female Red Headed finch likes is a bowl of seed with wheat germ oil mixed in it, she sits at that bowl for the longest time and eats!
