finchmix22 Deborah, they stared at him, tipping their heads with curiosity for a while, then ate the seed around him. It was a large bowl of seed they were in. They pecked at him a little, more out of curiosity checking him out I think. I had to leave the room, came back later and he was near death so I took him out. He was definitely too big for them to eat. I just wanted to see what they would do.
Maine blueberries are definitely great, especially the fresh picked kind. I have tons of them to go through (leaves, bugs and such)...and he'll be back in a bit with tons more, and go back tomorrow...and next week end. We get enough for the year in a few weekends. We're blessed to be able to get them, but he sure works for them. It's an all day trek. I wish I could share with you. :D

I love wild blueberries! In Michigan, my Grandma would send us kids out in the woods for blueberries for dessert, and I would come home with purple face, lips, teeth, and a tummy ache from all the berries I ate on the way.

Sally, I'll bet Michigan is a good place to pick them too with the cold climate. I think that's where they grow best. Your grandmother was probably hoping to make a few pies and instead had to make muffins because the expected volume dwindled down. :D Great memories!
@finchmix22 Deborah, I would love to go pick them with him. I've never been picking actually. I do have the benefit of eating them so I won't complain. As kids it was just blackberries where we lived in NJ. I was never fond of the rock hard seeds throughout.

Sally - That's a lovely memory!

We'd also pick wild blueberries behind our house.

There was a huge blackberry patch a few blocks away, in a lot between some houses. So we'd take our little beach buckets and we'd walk down there with my mum to pick them on hot summer nights.

It was lovely.
