Sally
Thanks Sally. Will do. The stuff that I'd put in was dried up. So I took it out and replaced with fresh. Also added a slice of apple for moisture.

Glad you enjoyed. It is a bit of a spoof of another thread, but all in good fun.

Your Royal-ness,

How are your spineless subjects doing? Bowing and scraping as your shadow falls across their lands from your high seat in your castle? Do I dare to hope that they quiver with joy at the very mention of your name, their Mighty Mealworm Overlord? Have they conquered any other mealworms and claimed their lands in your name?

Colt

Not yet, Colt, not yet...

But the time shall come, when all worms shall crawl across the ground at the very mention of my name. FOR I SHALL BE THEIR QUEEN, AND THEY SHALL FEAR ME, WORSE THAN A HUNGRY WAXBILL, WORSE THAN A STARVING FINCH! LOL...

So far, all these wormlings are doing, is eating carrots and potatoes. I haven't checked on them today. Tomorrow is feeding day for the peasants, and I shall be generous with the potato and carrot peels. Might even throw in some fish flakes for dessert.

Haha. Good to know. Keep us updated on them and if you're successful perhaps I'll start my own mealworm country and be the Prince of Mealworms. No sense in usurping your position. ;)

Colt

May as well give it a go. The prices on these things are high, so if we can grow them, why not? I pay $3.99 for a 100, and between all my guys, a hundred is next to nothing. Almost all my guys eat them, even the Gouldian juvies, and Socies, so I go through a lot of mealies.

lovezebs I've fought internally with raising them so long. But now that I have so many birds that require them for breeding I'm think it is going to be a must. I just need to sit down and really read about them and just do it.

Colt

Not much to it really.
As long as those darn black beetles don't jump out at me. My way of looking at it, is that they are here, as food for birds and other creatures. If they live outside, they are eaten by birds, right? I guess one has to look at it that that's their purpose in life.

Oh I don't mind the birds eating them. I'm just scared I'll forget aobut them or it will get too hot or too cold for them and the culture will crash or whatever...

Colt

If one never tries, one never knows :-D. Park the containers on your kitchen counter, I guarantee you won't forget them, lol ( just kidding ).

I was going to put them in the basement, but decided that it would be too cold, and that I probably would forget them. So I ended up placing my pretty containers beneath one of my flights, close to the furnace vent.

If it doesn't work this time, I will just try again until it does work.

I was looking up 'how to grow Phoenix worms'. That srems to be a lot more complicated, and involves poop and an army of flies. Yuck! I think I'll leave that for you to try, Colt :-D :-D :-D.

Oh I'm certainly not raising the Phoenix worms. lol I wimped out on fruit flies too. We get them in the house all the time and I think rotting fruit in the birdroom (adjacent to my kitchen) is a horrible idea. You should have seen George's face when I brought home old bananas from work. He was like, "You want to do what with them?!" Haha so needless to say that didn't happen either.

Mealworms I could do. And putting them under the flights probably isn't a bad idea...

Colt
Don't remind me. Those damn flightless fruit flies....

I remember buying a container , that must have had hundreds of them in there. The second I started to open the cover, they started to spill out. I grabbed a spoon and took a little batch out and tossed them into the cage, while attempting to slam the cover back on the container, flies crawling up my hands and arms, falling all over the floor, running off in all different directions.

It was like a nightmare.

The only ones who were quite calm, were my waxbills, sitting on their perch watching all this activity with mild interest, not even remotely tempted by all the delicious goodies racing all over the place.

That was it for fruit flies. For weeks afterwards, I was still finding the darn things, and I swear that somewhere along the way, they learned how to fly.
