Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
You just needed to tap them to the bottom of the container before opening it, then tap out how many you need, then tap again before putting lid on. So easy. I even made a video to show the technique and posted it.

Hi Karen.
Saw your video, tapped and tapped and TAPPED. There were just too many of the blasted things, and I wasn't fast enough for them. As quick as I could tap, they were up again by the hundreds, spilling out in droves. Plus, my guys just sat there watching them, so... No more fruit flies..........
Mealworms are a little more my speed, lol.

Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
Really enjoyed the post. So glad to know about the beetles before trying this. And the warning about fruit flies and the tapping - thanks Karen.
So how are things going? Can I place an order for your Northern wolf worms or have they proven so strong that they have the finches quacking in their nests?

My 'Gladiator Worms' are coming along. My 3 container 'worm farm' now have all sorts of really scary looking beetles in them. I'm half afraid to open the lids, to pop some food in there for them.
Beetles, I am told mean eggs, which in turn mean baby meal worms. ... ewwww yummy!
Regarding the fruit flies...... I don't know about them. Karen and others have had great success with them.
My experience, was a bit of a horror movie scenario. I had these little miseries crawling all over my hands and arms, falling on the floor, running in all different directions. There was a lot of yelling, jumping, stamping and swearing going on. The birds seemed to enjoy the whole thing, (not the flies mind you) my having a nervous break down and doing a crazy jig for their entertainment.
OH, AND BY THE WAY, I DID TAP AND TAP AND TAP...

Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
Elana,
Oh I believe you about the tap, tap, tap. I was visiting a fellow fincher and she introduced me to her white worm farm and offered to give me a starter batch. It became very clear very quickly her offer of free worms was because she was over run with success. They were located in a fridge in her garage. Let's just say the little guys were no longer contained within there plastic containers and they looked as if they might be preparing a garage invasion. It scared me! And thus, it was very easy for me to picture the explosion of fruit flies.
I worked in a vet clinic way back when and I clearly remember the feeling of a very large louse crawling up my arm that was gently resting on the chest of a large bald eagle having surgery to remove pullet fragments from his face. I was begging the other tech who was laughing hysterically to "Get it off! Get it Off! Before it crawls into my shirt!." Even though I logically know these giant lice cannot live on people, even though the louse was removed, as soon as I got home I jumped into the shower and scrubbed myself with a tar based shampoo just in case. I really did not care that these shampoos are not a particularly good product to use. Fortunately, safer products are now available.

Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
Hi Mary.
Many years ago, I worked in homeless drop in centre, where lice, fleas, crabs, and God knows what else, were a part of everyday life.
I remember coming home everyday, and jumping into a scalding hot shower, and scrubbing myself from head to toe, until I looked like a freshly boiled lobster.
The mealworms I can handle, although I have to admit that those beetles crawling around in those containers freak me out somewhat. Those flightless fruit flies, no thanks.

Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
I have seen maggots crawling in and out of wounds but that was on a dog. My Mom - who worked in Emerg - said a lot of homeless people have the same condition. I don't judge the homeless - and I do not get the impression you do either - but I too would be looking like a boiled lobster.

Hi Mary.
Regarding the -ranks- as you call them, I honestly don't know. I've never really paid much attention to it.
I guess you could PM Sally, and she could explain them to you, or tell you if there is a list of them somewhere.
Regarding the maggots, yes, you can find them in certain wounds. In that situation however, they are not as bad a thing as it might sound, because as gross as it sounds, they can actually clean a wound of infection.
On that lovely thought, good night.

Re: OH MY GOOD GOD, WHAT IS THIS?
lovezebs So I was going to quote the "I will be the Meal Worm Queen" Post, luckily I read on, and saw that that post and this entire thread really, is a spoof of another because I was going to quote it, and tell you that it sounded just like another forum member ...just replace the worms with A certain type of bird, and it was practically the same post!!! lol now that I know it's a spoof, I do not need to do that, however I wanted to mention to you that I thought this thread was lovely....sickening...a little disgusting at time, informative... but all in all gross. But, thank you for the laugh, the info, and as always my FAVORITE, the sarcasm....LOVED IT!!! Good luck with your bug, worm, farm kingdom... Queen of Damned...Worms!!!!!

Haahaaha!!! At least got you dancing anyway.
There are certain dark corners of bird keeping, that some may never wish tto enter...... definitely nit for the squeamish or faint of heart .....
~Elana~
P.S. Yes, it was a comical spoof, which some people got, others didn't.

Elana - Yes, I did know the maggots only eat the dead tissue...oops...decided to do a little google/youtube research - some maggots eat only dead tissue & some eat only live. Maggots and leeches are both used in medicine these days. link for those who are interested http://www.livescience.com/203-maggots- ... icine.html If you like to be 'grossed out' check out Youtube!

I used to feed mealworms (in the worm stage) to my bearded dragon, and as long as I kept the mealworms refrigerated, they didn't turn into beetles.
