I had tried 'clarified butter' (locally known as desi-ghee) made from milk, with good results tested on zebra finches

(As a diet)
(Can be use on vent...?????? Still to research)

What results are you looking for in providing any type of 'oil' as part of your finches "diet"?
As for applying an oil to the vent - are you looking to resolve eggbinding? If yes, you could use a tiny amount of a lubricant such as 'vaseline'.

Well, I mean like oil that can be used in egg food to keep maintain softness even if it is oven dried.
And also helps avoid egg binding problems other than applying on vent.

Hmmm...
Thankyou
Does olive oil affects breeding? Or finches breed normally?

Hemp oil is also good, good for us and them to.
(I have also started using coconut oil, which is suppose to be one of the healthier oils for us people. But I have not tried to give it to my birds.)
I also will put a little of the oil from vitamin E capsules on the perches, for them to stand in and be absorbed through the skin.

Oh, I also have not tried it, but you may want to look into walnut oil in little amounts. Walnuts are very good for your bird's liver and a few other things. I mostly just blend up some walnuts and add to my birds' seed, now and again. Nuts (and oils) although needed, can make them fat.
As well, always look for organic oils.

How about flax seed oil? A lot of seeds are naturally oily, but getting them to eat it isn't always easy.

I personally use either codliver oil or wheat germ oil.

I use both - at the same time... mixed in with the soakseed and fresh and commercial eggfood at the rate of 1 teaspoon (ea) per 4 hardboiled eggs.

I've used cod liver and wheatgerm AND coconut oil. Personally, I like the coconut oil the best but it is probably the most expensive. It also SMELLS the best -- they use it on Movie popcorn sometimes.
